Universities are to be given £10 million of National Lottery funding in a bid to get more students to put on their men's or ladies sportswear and take up team exercise.
This follows research commissioned by Sport England, which found that fewer than 30 per cent of university students play sport on a regular basis.
Karen Rothery, chief executive of British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS), said that the funding will help to increase participation levels on campus.
She went on to say that the money will also pay for more officials and coaches, which are "key to sustaining student participation".
"By encouraging participation now, we will be creating a nation of active people who will be great ambassadors for the next generation to come," Ms Rothery added.
A drive called Active Universities has been launched by Sport England with the view of motivating more students to put on their men's and ladies fitness wear and participate in sport at least three times a week.
