One in five people in their 50s don their men's or ladies fitness clothing and make use of a gym, a recent study has suggested.

Conducted by Benenden Healthcare, the research involved 4,000 Brits aged between 18 and 75.

It quizzed them on a number of aspects including how often they exercise, how frequently they go out for meals and how many times they go on holiday each year.

The research found that, in the average week, middle-aged Brits have at least one meal out, at least three glasses of wine and exercise for nearly two hours.

A spokesman for Benenden Healthcare said: "The over 50s are setting the pace well ahead of their younger counterparts. Being 50 is definitely the new 25."

Earlier in the year, scientific researcher Dr Ulrich Laufs told the BBC that exercise has an anti-ageing effect.

This is because it slows down the shortening of chromosomes that keep a cell's DNA stable, which usually occurs naturally with age.
