30 mins exercise per day 'could cut bowel cancer risk'

Women who don their ladies fitness clothing and exercise for 30 minutes a day could lower their risk of developing bowel cancer, an expert has claimed.

Professor Annie Anderson, chief nutritional advisor to Bowel Cancer UK, explained that this exercise does not necessarily have to be completed in one long session.

"It could be two 15-minute periods in a day," she said, suggesting that people get off the bus early so that they have to walk for quarter of an hour in the morning and evening

"It's about being physically active as much as you can every day of the week," she added.

Professor Anderson's comments follow announcements from the government that it plans to increase detection of bowel cancer using a new method of screening known as flexible sigmoidoscopy.

The government claims that this method could save as many as 3,000 lives a year from what is the country's second biggest cancer killer.
