£80k raised for charity through rowing 'marathon'
27 November 2009 17:45
Over 70 Deloitte employees donned their gym wear recently to raise £80,000 in a charity row-a-thon.
Staff from the international accounting and consulting firm had originally set a target of raising £50,000 for Cancer Research UK and the NSPCC, but ended up raising much more by exercising for hours on the indoor rowing machines.
Rob Bryant, partner of consulting at Deloitte, said "To raise so much money is remarkable, these are not ex-rowers, but people who have never rowed before."
He said there was a really good atmosphere on the day and added he had been told it was once of the biggest attempts to do the rowing marathon, with a lot of the participants rowing for three to four-and-a-half hours to raise as much funds as possible.
Clients, suppliers, and other counterparts sponsored the staff members' efforts but Mr Bryant said he hopes to expand it so that the company's clients can compete as well.
According to British Rowing, rowing both on and off the water is a great way to develop fitness and maintain good health.
