Employers can reduce the number of days that their workers have off sick by encouraging them to don their gym clothing and be physically active, according to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP).

A recent survey carried out by the society revealed that 25 per cent of employees often do not take a break during their working day.

Some 46 per cent of the workers surveyed said they suffered physical pain due to working in the same position for long periods of time.

Clare Claridge, chartered physiotherapist, said: "Taking regular exercise is great because it helps to relieve the pressure, allowing you to get some breathing space, which will ensure you can perform well when you get back."

The CSP said that employers should encourage their workers to take full lunch breaks and to get out of the building and walk around.

Last year, research conducted by the British Heart Foundation revealed that more than one in three people avoid exercising during their working day for fear of looking sweaty when they return to the office.
