Teenagers who don their ladies fitness clothing and exercise regularly are less likely than their sedentary peers to suffer from cognitive impairment when they are older, a recent study has suggested.
Researchers from Sunnybrook HealthSciences Centre in Canada found that women who are physically active at any point in their life have lower risk of this problem compared to those who are inactive.
However, the study of over 9,000 women revealed that teenage physical activity was the most important.
"To minimise the risk of dementia, physical activity should be encouraged from early life," said Dr Middleton, of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
She suggested that all is not lost for those beyond their teens, as they too can reduce their risk of cognitive impairment by becoming more active.
Back in March, scientists from the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology in Freiburg claimed that exercise can reactivate the production of new cells in women's brains.
