Aerobic and resistance exercise 'is good for diabetes sufferers'

Females suffering from type 2 diabetes should don their ladies fitness clothing and take part in a combination of aerobic exercise and resistance training, a recent study has suggested.

Researchers from Louisiana State University System found that the combination of these exercises was associated with improved glycemic levels among patients with type 2 diabetes compared to those who were inactive.

The results of the study have been published in the November 24th issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Such a level of improvement was not seen among patients who performed either aerobic exercise or resistance training alone.

"Only the combination exercise group improved maximum oxygen consumption compared with the control group. All exercise groups reduced waist circumference … compared with the control group," the researchers wrote.

Earlier in the year, researchers from York University in Canada found that those with type 1 diabetes do not perform as well as their healthy peers during exercise or when participating in sports.
