People could increase their endurance when they are exercising in their gym clothing by taking amino acid supplements, a study has suggested.
Researchers from Milan University in Italy found that, when mice are given drinking water laced with a concoction of amino acids, they can not only exercise for a greater length of time, they live for longer than the average mouse.
Published in the October issue of Cell Metabolism, a Cell Press publication, the study suggests that the most important ingredients of the cocktail are so-called branched-chain amino acids - specifically leucine, isoleucine, and valine - which are the 'building blocks' of proteins.
Enzo Nisoli, one of the researchers involved in the study, said that the results support a "general philosophy of a nutritional approach to disease, ageing, and problems of energy status".
Last month, sports scientists from the University of Edinburgh found that the endurance of those aged between 12 and 14 playing in team games can be improved if they drink an isotonic sports drink before and during the exercise.
