Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) such as back pain, repetitive strain injuries and joint injuries are responsible for more sick days than any other health condition, a new study has revealed.
Researchers involved in the Fit for Work study found that nearly half (49 per cent) of all absencesfrom work and 60 per cent of permanent work incapacity in the European Union are caused by MSDs.
The study was conducted across 25 countries in Europe and beyond by UK-based research organisation The Work Foundation.
Around 100 million Europeans were found to suffer from chronic musculoskeletal pain, over 40 million of whom are workers, with up to 40 per cent having to give up work due to their condition.
Tatiana Quadrello, senior researcher at The Work Foundation, said: "The Fit for Work study clearly suggests that early intervention is a key factor in allowing people with MSDs to remain in work."
Putting on women's yoga clothing and practicing pilates, yoga or relaxation techniques can help to ease repetitive strain injury pain, according to the NHS.
