Doing an hour of exercise a day is too intense for those just starting a fitness regime, an expert has claimed.
Steve Halsall, exercise expert for Mirror.co.uk, suggested that people who have just invested in gym wear with the intention of starting to exercise regularly should build up the amount and intensity of activity they do gradually.
"Doing things like a half-hour walk to work and half-an-hour back would have an impact," said Mr Halsall.
"Yet also you would have to do it progressively to get your worth out of it, building it up each week," he added.
Mr Halsall's comments follow the recent publication of a 13-year study by researchers from Harvard University which found that middle-aged women only lost weight when they did moderate exercise for an hour each day.
He said that if people have an hour in which to exercise and they want to do something in their gym wear that burns lots of calories and has a big effect on their metabolism, they should do a high-intensity cross training session.
