Boxing 'boosts mental and physical fitness'

Boxing helps to keep women mentally and physically fit as will as learning how to defend themselves, according to an amateur boxer.

Speaking to The Sentinel, boxer Abi Hamlett said that she thought men are naturally more aggressive when they get into the ring.

However, she added that women can gain a sense of empowerment by putting on ladies sportswear and boxing gloves.

Ms Hamlett told the newspaper: "You've got a skill which means you can defend yourself, and it means you are physically and mentally fit.

"It's a technical sport rather than violent though."

Women's boxing was recently selected for inclusion in the 2012 London Olympics by the International Olympic Committee.

This has raised the profile of the sport over the last few weeks, provoking encouraging words from female boxers as well as outrage from boxing luminaries.

Ms Hamlett explained that she was inspired to take up boxing as a sport through her love for boxercise training.
