People in the UK are putting their health at risk by eating too much salt, according to the British Dietetic Association (BDA).
Sian Porter, dietician and spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association, said that, on average, Brits are eating almost nine grams of salt a day, three grams more than the recommended maximum amount.
Ms Porter said that most people are unaware that around three teaspoons of the average person's daily salt intake is "hidden" and is already in the food that they eat.
"There is very good evidence that reducing salt intake can reduce the risk of certain cardiovascular diseases, particularly strokes and high blood pressure," said Ms Porter.
High blood pressure is particularly dangerous for those that have diabetes with certain complications.
Last month, a study revealed that women who put on their ladies fitness wear and exercise regularly can reduce their risk of developing diabetes by more than a third.
The research, published in an online edition of the Lancet, showed that exercise and weight loss can delay or prevent the onset of diabetes more effectively than the prescription drug metformin.
