Brits waste £37 million a year by failing to don their men's and ladies fitness clothing and make use of their gym memberships and slimming classes, a study has revealed.

Conducted by One Poll, the research found that forgotten direct debits for unused gym memberships and slimming groups can leave the average adult with a £303 dent in their finances.

Darren Fell, of online accountants Crunch.co.uk, said: ''Although officially being out of the recession, things are still extremely difficult for many Britons so it's crucial to save money by not buying things we don't really need or want."

He went on to say that a lot of people feel angry with themselves if they spend money on something they do not end up using.

Earlier this month, a YouGov survey conducted on behalf of World Cancer Research Fund revealed that 30 per cent of people claim the cost of gyms and leisure centres prevents them being more physically active.
