Type 2 diabetes sufferers who are obese or overweight can reduce their risk of heart disease by taking part in an intervention programme that encourages calorie restriction and regular exercise in ladies fitness wear.
This is according to the results of the Look Ahead study, conducted in the US and now in its fifth year.
Some 5,145 type 2 diabetes sufferers were involved in the study and were split into two groups.
Those in the intensive lifestyle intervention group lost, on average, 6.2 per cent of their initial body weight after four years, compared to 0.9 per cent among members of the support and education group.
"This important study shows that lifestyle changes have long-term favourable effects on diabetes control and cardiovascular disease risk factors in overweight or obese individuals with type 2 diabetes," said Dr Griffin Rodgers, director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the primary sponsor of the study.
Last month, research conducted by the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center found that the advice that doctors give to their patients about dieting and exercise can be affected by their own personal lifestyle habits.
