Cancer mortality rates in the EU are falling, but the number of cases of the disease diagnosed is increasing, partly because women are failing to don their ladies fitness clothing and exercise, a medical journal has suggested.
This issue is focused on in a special edition of the European Journal of Cancer, which is the official journal of the European Cancer Organisation.
It states that the incidence of cancer increased by almost 20 per cent, from 2.1 million new cases in 2002 to 2.5 million in 2008.
The issue emphasises the need to prevent cancer by focusing on the four main risk factors: smoking, obesity, alcohol and physical inactivity.
"We know that large numbers of colon cancer cases could be avoided by reducing exposure to risk factors, two of the most easily controllable of which are related to physical inactivity and excess weight," said one of the co-authors of the paper Dr Andrew Renehan, from the University of Manchester.
Last month, researchers from the University of Alberta found that a specific form of exercise - yoga - aided women in their recovery from breast cancer.
