Improving women's cardiovascular fitness levels, perhaps through exercise sessions in their gym clothing, can reduce their risk of dying prematurely.
This is according to a study published in the November 2010 issue of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise - the official journal of the American College of Sports Medicine.
Researchers found that it is not just a person's size that predicts their level of health and overall risk of death.
They discovered that even modest levels of cardiovascular fitness are associated with a lower risk of death in women and claim that regular aerobic activity such as brisk walking is beneficial.
"Physicians and other healthcare professionals should make a concerted effort to estimate or measure cardiorespiratory fitness levels before categorising patients' risk status on obesity measures alone," said Dr Stephen Farrell, lead author of the study.
Earlier this week, research published online in the British Journal of Sports Medicine suggested that people who exercise regularly suffer from fewer and milder colds than those who are not physically fit.
