Cash incentives 'might not encourage people to exercise'

Cash incentives 'might not encourage people to exercise'

29 September 2010 15:02

Cash incentives might not motivate people to don their ladies fitness wear and lose weight as intended, Slimming World has suggested.

A spokeswoman for the organisation said that these incentives will be especially ineffective if they are not run alongside specialist behaviour-changing support.

Her comments follow the publication of a report commissioned by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence which suggested that the NHS should give overweight people money to encourage them to lose weight.

The spokeswoman said that slimmers are most successful in losing weight when they do so for themselves, using their increasing body confidence and improving health as the motivation.

"If a person is only motivated by a cash incentive then once they achieve their target weight and receive their reward then there is nothing to keep them on track," she added.

She went on to say that if these people are not provided with the necessary skills to follow a healthy lifestyle then it is almost inevitable that they will put the weight they have lost back on.
