Women who do not have children are more likely to put on their ladies running wear and exercise than those who are parents, a study has suggested.
Researchers from the Montreal Heart Institute (MHI) conducted the study, which involved756 people.
Its aim was to ascertain why the majority of heart patients do not succeed in following an exercise regimen, regardless of its benefits.
One of the major unexpected conclusions drawn from this study was that living with someone, such as a spouse, has no impact on participation in physical activities.
Another was that living with children has a negative influence on a person's ability to exercise.
"This study has led us to reconsider the way we go about motivating our patients to change their lifestyle habits," said study leader Dr Simon Bacon, associate researcher at the MHI and professor at Concordia University.
According to the British Heart Foundation, overweight people who reduce their body mass index through exercise can lower their risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
