Climate has an effect on a person's feeling of wellbeing when they are exercising outdoors in their gym clothing, an expert has claimed.

Alan Gordon, exercise and nutrition consultant, said that people's spirits are lifted more when they exercise outdoors in warm, fair weather rather than in the rain and cold.

"If one person was in Scotland and one was in Spain, the feeling of wellbeing would be greater for the person in the nicer climate," he explained.

He went on to suggest that the cardiovascular fitness effects would be the same, but the sense of satisfaction depends entirely on the surroundings.

His comments follow the publication of a study by a team at the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry, which found that exercising in the natural environment has more of a positive impact on mental and physical health than working out in a gym.

These findings have been published in the research journal Environmental Science and Technology.
