Scientists in the US have been given a grant to see whether exercise, perhaps in ladies fitness clothing, could benefit female dialysis patients.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has provided the University of Illinois scientists with $2.1 million (£1.36 million) to research this possibility.
Ken Wilund, a faculty member in the university's Department of Kinesiology and Community Health and the Division of Nutritional Sciences, explained that dialysis patients lose muscle as a result of chronic inflammation, loss of amino acids during dialysis and because many have a sedentary lifestyle.
As part of the research, patients will be encouraged to exercise more in the hope that this will rebuild muscle.
"We think we'll see benefits because we hear anecdotes about dialysis patients who have begun to exercise and are able to walk into the clinic for the first time in years," Mr Wilund added.
Last month, researchers from the University of Alberta found that a specific form of exercise, yoga, helped people in their recovery from breast cancer.
