Researchers from the University of Exeter are looking into whether women who smoke are more likely to give up if they don their ladies fitness clothing and exercise more.
The study, led by professor Adrian Taylor from the university's School of Sport and Health Sciences, has been funded by the National Institute for Health Research Health Technology Assessment (NIHR HTA) programme.
It will involve smokers who have not used the NHS's Stop Smoking services.
Mr Taylor explained that previous studies have shown adding physical activity to usual care can increase abstinence rates among smokers who have decided to give up abruptly.
"However, the role of increasing physical activity as an aid to smoking reduction leading on to quitting has not been examined, especially among 'hard-to-reach' smokers," he added.
Mr Taylor went on to say that the research being undertaken by his team could increase the numbers who enter into smoking cessation therapy.
Last month, researchers from Brigham Young University discovered that a lack of social interaction can be as bad for a person's health as smoking or not doing enough exercise.
