Women can have the heart and metabolism of someone 16 years younger by putting on ladies fitness wear and riding their bikes every day for twelve weeks, new research has shown.
In a study by the University of California- Berkeley, a group of women, averaging 55 years of age, had to cycle for an hour every morning for 12 weeks.
Marilyn Graham, 56, took part in the study and said that the hour of cycling she had to do every morning was difficult at first but she said after a while: "I was feeling good. I had energy left over at the end of the day, less mental sluggishness and I dropped two dress sizes."
Following the study researchers reported that postmenopausal women can achieve the same health benefits from regular, vigorous exercise as younger women.
Professor George Brooks of the University of California said: "The women in our study had the cardiovascular and metabolic capabilities of women 16 years younger."
According to the NHS, cycling is the third most popular sport in the UK with an estimated 3.1 million people riding a bike each month.
Donning your women's fitness wear and getting on your bike is easier on your joints than running or other high-impact aerobic activities, but still helps you get into shape, said the NHS.
