Danger of exercise to hypertensive people 'blocked'

Danger of exercise to hypertensive people 'blocked'

06 April 2011 16:08

Women with hypertension can experience an even greater increase in their blood pressure when they put on their ladies running clothing and exercise, but scientists have found a way of blocking this.

Researchers from the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern Medical Center found that hypertensive people experience decreased blood flow and oxygen in their muscles when they exercise.

They also identified a particular blood pressure medication that minimises this potentially dangerous effect - an angiotensin receptor blocker.

Lead author of the study Dr Wanpen Vongpatanasin, associate professor of internal medicine at UT Southwestern, said: "Hypertensive patients have increased nerves and impaired ability to maintain muscle blood flow adequately."

She went on to say that she believes the angiotensin receptor blocker directly targets blood vessels to improve blood flow.

Dr Susanne Sorensen, head of research at the Alzheimer's Society, recently suggested that the best way to reduce the risk of dementia is to exercise regularly and go for frequent blood pressure checks.
