Diabetes 'can decrease exercise performance'

Women with type 1 diabetes do not perform as well as their healthy peers when exercising in their ladies sportswear, a study has suggested.

Researchers from York University in Canada found that young athletes with this form of diabetes can experience a marked decrease in performance as a result of their low blood sugar levels.

Physical activity can cause a dip in blood sugar levels, which can, in turn, also cause a decline in cognitive abilities.

Lead researcher Michael Riddell suggested that this does not mean that those suffering from diabetes should avoid exercise altogether.

"Our results show that those with diabetes can compete on equal ground, provided they learn to manage their condition," he explained.

Earlier this year, research published in the New England Journal of Medicine suggested that exercise and a healthy diet can prevent or delay the progression of type 2 diabetes in those who already have the disease.
