Dietary supplement 'boosts stamina during high-intensity exercise'

Women who want to boost their stamina during their gym clothing-clad workouts should consider taking a particular dietary supplement, a study has suggested.

Researchers from the University of Exeter found that the supplement, which boosts nitric oxide in the body, can allow people to exercise for up to 20 per cent longer and could improve race times by between one and two per cent.

"While this may seem small, this is a very meaningful improvement - particularly at elite levels where small gains can be the difference between winning and losing," said professor Andrew Jones, from the university's School of Sport and Health Sciences.

Previous research from the university showed that the high nitrate content of beetroot juice, which also boosts nitric oxide in the body, has a similar effect on performance.

Last month, researchers from Heidelberg University Hospital found that patients suffering from chronic heart failure can exercise for longer if they undergo acupuncture.
