Sales of sweet snacks jumped in the last fortnight of January, according to price comparison site MySupermarket, so if women want to stick to their new year's resolution of dropping a few pounds they should consider donning their ladies fitness wear and spending a bit longer at the gym.
The site found that in the final few weeks of last month, sales of chocolate increased by 44 per cent, ice cream by 23 per cent, and biscuits and cake by 12 per cent, the Telegraph reported.
Jonny Steel, spokesman for MySupermarket, told the newspaper that low sales of sugary and fatty foods in the first two weeks of 2010 showed that people were trying to eat more healthily.
"But with this year being one of the coldest winters in recent times, shoppers have been turning to comfort foods to give themselves the feel good factor that they crave," he conceded.
Eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly are the best ways to lose excess weight.
According to freedieting.com, taking part in a 30 minute high-impact aerobics class, perhaps in gym wear, could burn around 240 calories.
