Rewarding healthy women with tax credits could lead to reduced obesity levels and reduce the burden on the NHS, according to a leading doctor in the north-west.
Dr Kailash Chand, chairman of Tameside Primary Care Trust and a British Medical Association representative, has called for new tax credits for people who exercise in women's fitness wear.
Speaking to the Manchester Evening News he also said that, with NHS funding set to fall over the next few years, he would like to see a tax on fatty foods and a law to make all school dinners healthy.
The Department of Health said that obesity is one of the biggest health challenges faced by the country with almost one in four adults in England already classed as obese.
It estimates that the cost of obesity to the wider economy is £16 billion and predicts this will rise to £50 billion per year by 2050 if left unchecked.
