Dogs are 'fitness trainers' best friends'

Dog owners who put on their ladies fitness wear and take to the park with their furry friends could be getting more exercise than those who head to the confines of a gym, it has been suggested.

On average, people exercise their animal twice a day for just under half an hour each time, adding up to five hours and 38 minutes a week, the study by pet healthcare experts Bob Martin revealed.

Those who do not have a dog but head to the gym tend to get just an hour and 20 minutes of exercise, although nearly half of non-pet owners get no exercise at all.

"A couple of short walks a day soon adds up and this research shows that it amounts to more time than people spend in the gym," a spokesman for the company said.

Eight in ten of those questioned said they enjoy taking their pooch out for a walk, compared to just 16 per cent who look forward to putting on their ladies gym wear and heading for the fitness equipment.ADNFCR-2569-ID-19482572-ADNFCR
