Osteoporosis sufferers should don their ladies fitness wear and take part in martial arts classes, a recent study has suggested.
Published in the open-access journal BMC Research Notes, the study looked at the effects of fall training in a group of six healthy people, as safety reasons ruled out the use of those with osteoporosis.
Brenda Groen and researchers from the Sint Maartenskliniek in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, measured the level of hip impacts experienced by the participants during the martial arts fall exercises.
The methods taught in martial arts involve turning falls into rolling movements, which reduces joint impact.
"Since martial arts techniques reduce hip impact forces and can be learned by older persons, martial arts fall training may prevent hip fractures among persons with osteoporosis," concluded Ms Groen.
Around three million people in the UK have osteoporosis and over 230,000 fractures take place every year as a result, according to the NHS.
It encourages women to, where possible, take part in regular physical activity, perhaps in ladies fitness wear, as this helps to strengthen the bones.
