Women suffering from back pain should don their ladies fitness clothing and take part in exercise therapy, a study has suggested.
Researchers from the University of Montreal have been testing the efficacy of an exercise machine designed specifically for back muscles on patients with lumbago (lower back pain).
Electromyography (EMG) sensors were used to measure activity and fatigue taking place in different muscles during the workout.
Results showed that using the machine, in which patients adopt a semi-sitting position, was beneficial, particularly when a cushion was used to stabilise the pelvis as this brought about a better response from the back muscles.
Christian Lariviere, one of the researchers, recommended those who suffer severe pain not to push them selves with difficult exercises too quickly, beginning with low to medium-effort stretches without weights or apparatus.
"Progressively, the individual will gain confidence and can use machines that require superior strength," he added.
This research supports advice from health journalist Irene Maher, who wrote in a piece for the St Petersburg Times earlier this year that some of the best remedies for back pain include stretching and strengthening the abdomen and muscles that support the back.
