Women suffering from depression can tackle their condition by donning their ladies fitness wear and exercising more, a psychology expert has suggested.
Professor Jasper Smits, a psychologist at the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, said that those who exercise not only report fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression but lower levels of stress and anger too.
Researchers taking part in the university's Anxiety Research and Treatment Programme examined previous scientific studies, and concluded that exercise can supplement traditional treatments.
They found that physical activity, which could be done in ladies fitness clothing, can act as a treatment for those with depression who cannot access traditional therapies.
The research was presented at the annual conference of the Anxiety Disorder Association of America in Baltimore last month.
Julia Kaye of Journeys, a charity that deals with depression, said: "Medication alone doesn't work. It's more likely to work in conjunction with various self-help techniques."
She added that these can include "raising activity levels and healthy eating".
