Women who don their ladies fitness wear and take their dogs for regular walks as part of their exercise regimes are less at risk of health problems, a study has suggested.
Researchers at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services studied 916 participants and found that those who regularly walk their four-legged pals reported lower body mass indices (BMI), lower tobacco use, fewer chronic conditions and less depressive symptoms.
"Dog walking should be encouraged among community members of all ages as a method of promoting and sustaining a healthy and active lifestyle," advised lead researcher Cindy Lentino.
Lentino and her research team concluded that funding should be set aside for programmes that incorporate dog walking.
Back in March, Paddy Driscoll, canine trainer and behaviour specialist, told the Telegraph that there are lots of different sporting activities that people can engage in with their dogs, such as agility sessions like those seen on Crufts.
