Donning ladies yoga wear 'reduces fibromyalgia pain'

Women suffering from the painful condition fibromyalgia (FM) can reduce their symptoms by donning their ladies yoga clothing and taking part in the Indian form of meditation, researchers have suggested.

A study published in the November issue of the journal Pain claims that patients participating in a yoga programme showed significantly greater improvement in FM symptoms and function than patients on a standard FM care scheme.

"Although yoga has been practiced for millennia, only recently have researchers begun to demonstrate yoga's effects on persons suffering from persistent pain," said lead investigator of the study Dr James Carson, of Oregon Health & Science University.

He explained that the programme being used, called Yoga of Awareness, integrates a wide spectrum of yoga-based techniques, including postures, mindfulness meditation and breathing exercises.

Back in August, researchers from Boston University School of Medicine found that yoga can improve people's moods and reduce their levels of anxiety.
