The amount of exercise EU citizens take part in, perhaps in their gym clothing, should be monitored, it has been claimed.
These suggestions were made in the Chronic Disease Alliance's report, titled A Unified Prevention Approach – The Case for Urgent Political Action to Reduce the Social and Economic Burden of Chronic Disease Through Prevention.
It identifies the four main risk factors for chronic diseases as being tobacco, poor diet, alcohol and lack of physical activity.
The report recommends that, at an EU level, the collection, analysis and dissemination of information on the effectiveness of interventions to eradicate these should be intensified.
It also states that regular surveys should be used to monitor EU citizens' participation in physical activity.
At a national level, action on physical activity should include prioritising walking and cycling as modes of transport and the development of recreational areas that encourage physical activity.
Just this week, researchers from Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center in the US found that African-American women can reduce their risk of developing breast cancer by 64 per cent if they exercise for at least two hours each week.
