Energy drinks - bad for health?

Energy drinks - bad for health?

18 August 2010 11:59

Many women rely on energy drinks to keep them going while exercising in their ladies fitness clothing, but a scientist has highlighted that the high caffeine content of these beverages can actually cause more harm than good.

Stephanie Ballard, assistant professor of pharmacy practice at Nova Southeastern University's West Palm Beach campus, studied the effects of energy drinks on keen exercisers.

"Most of the performance-enhancing effects of energy drinks can be linked to their caffeine content," she said.

Ms Ballard went on to say that caffeine has been reported to cause a number of medical complaints, such as insomnia, nervousness, arrhythmias, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, pregnancy and childbirth complication, gastrointestinal upset and death.

She highlighted that energy drinks can contain as much as 505mg of caffeine in a single container, which is the equivalent of drinking 14 cans of Coca-Cola.

Back in June, the American College of Sports Medicine found that more than one-third of young athletes involved in a survey admitted to mixing energy drinks with alcohol.
