England's women's football team begin their Uefa European Championship campaign today (August 25th) with a game against Italy.

First coach Hope Powell believes that this year's England side is "more competitive" and better all round than the 2005 squad.

She described England's first opponents as "fast developing, technically gifted" and with some "really clever players".

England's other Group C opponents may also cause a problem for the team when they don their women's sportswear for each game, according to Powell.

In particular, Sweden could pose a problem, being "in the top five in the world" and with the tournament coming just after they won the Algarve Cup.

However, Powell is confident that the team's more experienced players give the team the necessary edge to "win tournaments and become better".

A total of 12 teams are taking part in the tournament, including 2003 and 2007 World Cup winners Germany.
