People can inherit the urge to don their gym clothing and take part in physical activity, but this can often be overridden by the environment they grow up in, a recent study has suggested.
Conducted by Cancer Research UK, the study of more than 100 pairs of young twins revealed that enjoyment of exercise was influenced by differences in genetics.
However, whether children enjoy exercise or not, the amount they get to take part in is mainly influenced by their families or schools.
Professor Jane Wardle, from Cancer Research UK's Health Behaviour Research Centre based at University College London, said: "This research shows us how important it is to encourage exercise in schools and at home."
Back in October last year, Alison Morris, editor of parental advice site mydaughter.co.uk, claimed that mothers should adopt a healthy lifestyle themselves if they want their children to take part in a greater amount of exercise and eat more healthily.
She suggested that if women want their children to do more physical activity, they should don their ladies fitness wear and lead by example.
