Even light exercise 'can substantially reduce risk of early death'

12 August 2010 17:08

Even light or moderate intensity physical activity in ladies gym clothing can substantially reduce the risk of early death, a study has suggested.

Researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), Cambridge University and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden combined the results from a number of studies on the health impact of physical activity.

They found that those who do hardly any physical activity at all experience the largest health benefits from light or moderate activity, such as walking and cycling.

The more activity a person does, the better, but the benefits of even a small amount of physical activity are very large in the least active, the researchers reveal.

Study leader James Woodcock said: "This research confirms that it is not just exercising hard that is good for you but even moderate everyday activities, like walking and cycling, can have major health benefits."

The study has been published in the International Journal of Epidemiology.

Earlier this week, Tony Gallagher, fitness expert at the Daily Telegraph, explained that people should try to cycle to work if they want to fit exercise and weight loss into their daily routines.
