Excess antioxidants 'can be harmful'

Women who are keen on donning their gym wear and living a healthy lifestyle should make sure that they are not taking too many antioxidants, as these can be harmful if consumed in large amounts, according to a recent study.

Researchers from Kansas State University found that there is a "delicate" balance between pro-oxidants and antioxidants in the body and that an excess of the latter can sometimes impair muscle function.

Bridget Benelam, nutrition scientist at the British Nutrition Foundation, said: "Antioxidants help to 'mop up' the oxidative products produced by normal processes in the body.

"However, being healthy is all about balance and taking large doses of antioxidant supplements may have negative effects."

She recommended eating a variety of healthy foods so that all the nutrients that the body needs are consumed, but not in excessive amounts.

According to the to the Food Standards Agency website, any food prepared with fats or oils is likely to contain antioxidants.
