Fibromyalgia (FM) patients can improve their symptoms by undergoing a combination of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) sessions and special exercise programmes, perhaps in gym clothing, a study has suggested.
Researchers from Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre found that CBT and exercise training that is tailored to pain-avoidance, when delivered at a relatively early stage after diagnosis, is likely to promote beneficial treatment outcomes for high-risk FM patients.
Junior investigator Saskia van Koulil said that the results demonstrate that offering high-risk FM patients tailored treatments can improve both short- and long-term physical and psychological outcomes.
"The effects were overall maintained at six months, suggesting that patients continued to benefit from the treatment," she added.
According to the NHS, nearly one in 20 people across the world and around 1.76 million in England and Wales suffer from FM.
It recommends swimming, or just sitting in a heated pool as good treatment options for those suffering with the condition.
