Women who want to avoid getting ill this winter should start donning their ladies fitness clothing and exercise more, an expert has claimed.

Amy Hendel, a registered physician assistant and nutritionist, said that there are many things that people can do to improve their immune systems.

She said it is important that people eat lots of fruit and vegetables as the nutrients and vitamins that they contain help to build up the body's defences.

"Keep in mind that diet alone is only part of the equation. Incorporate exercise into your daily routine, and remember small bouts of exercise add up over the course of the week," she went on to say.

Her comments follow the publication of research by the Nutrilite Health Institute, which found that the majority of Americans reported getting a cold or flu over the past year.

Some 40 per cent of those surveyed, however, said that they do not plan to eat more fruit and vegetables - which is arguably the easiest way to help potentially prevent illness during the cold and flu season.

Earlier in the year, yoga guru Lindsay Fields wrote on Citizen-Times.com that yoga exercises are good for boosting the immune system.
