Caloric restriction and exercise in gym clothing delays some of the debilitating effects of ageing, a study has suggested.

Researchers from Harvard University found that a healthy diet and an increase in physical activity causes this delay by rejuvenating the connections between nerves and the muscles that they control.

"Caloric restriction and exercise have numerous, dramatic effects on our mental acuity and motor ability," said Joshua Sanes, a professor of molecular and cellular biology and director of the Center for Brain Science at Harvard.

He went on to say that the new research hints that these "extremely powerful lifestyle factors" act by attenuating or reversing the decline in the nervous system's synapses.

The research involved mice genetically engineered so that their nerve cells glowed in fluorescent colours.

Back in December, research from the Institute of Healthy Ageing at University College London revealed that a vegetarian diet can slow the ageing process.
