Women over the age of 50 are less likely to sustain fractures if they don their ladies fitness clothing and take part in physical activity, guidelines from Osteoporosis Canada have suggested.
The guidelines are aimed at preventing fragility fractures, which are the consequence of osteoporosis, in both sexes and are published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
Dr Alexandra Papaioannou, of McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences, and co-authors explain in the guidelines that these fractures are responsible for "excess mortality, morbidity, chronic pain, institutionalisation and economic costs".
"They represent 80 per cent of all fractures in menopausal women over age 50 and those with hip or vertebral fractures have substantially increased risk of death post-fracture," the authors continued.
As well as exercise, the guidelines include information on calcium and vitamin D supplementation, pharmacological therapies and risk management.
Last month, researchers from Oulu Deaconess Institute in Finland found that home-based exercises can improve the long-term balance and gait of elderly people, which reduces their likelihood of falls and fractures.
