Women can reduce their risk of developing dementia by putting on their ladies fitness clothing and exercising regularly, Alzheimer's Research UK has suggested.

Alison Cranage, spokeswoman for the UK charity, said that eating a healthy and varied diet can also prevent cognitive decline.

"Some research has suggested that a diet low in fat, with lots of fruit and vegetables and including some oily fish, can help lower our risk," she explained.

Ms Cranage went on to say that those who already suffer from dementia sometimes forget to eat if left to their own devices, so it is important for carers or family members to make sure these people are well fed and hydrated.

Her comments follow the publication of a study in the journal Age and Ageing, which revealed that light to moderate consumption of alcohol could help to lower the risk of dementia among those aged 75 and over.
