Women suffering complications with their deep vein thrombosis should don their ladies fitness clothing and exercise more, a study has suggested.
A research article published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal details how chronic post-thrombotic syndrome develops in as many as 50 per cent of patients with deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
This can cause leg pain, heaviness, swelling, water retention, hyperpigmentation, varicose veins and even leg ulcers.
Dr Susan Kahn, professor of medicine at McGill University's Division of Internal Medicine, and co-authors wrote that new approaches to managing post-thrombotic syndrome are needed.
"We performed a pilot trial to obtain data on the effectiveness of exercise training to treat post-thrombotic syndrome and to assess the feasibility of performing a multicentre study to address this question," they added.
The results led the authors to conclude that exercise training may improve post-thrombotic syndrome and should be evaluated as a treatment in further clinical trials.
Earlier this month, research published in the December issue of the International Journal of Clinical Practice suggested that exercising regularly can reduce a person's risk of developing around 24 physical and mental health problems.
