Women should don their ladies fitness clothing and exercise regularly, as this could improve brain health.
This is according to Susan Tapert, a professor of psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego and director of substance abuse and mental illness in the VA San Diego Healthcare System.
Her comments followed the recent publication of a study carried out by the Northern California Institute for Research and Education in San Francisco, which revealed that alcohol abuse and dependence are often associated with a high body mass index (BMI).
The study also suggested that brain injury can be caused by a combination of obesity, excessive drinking and chronic cigarette smoking.
"Weight loss, exercise and improved self-care in addition to stopping drinking could result in improvements to brain health," said Ms Tapert.
Last month, researchers at New York University's Langone Medical Center revealed that obese adolescents with type 2 diabetes can improve their cognitive performance by exercising more.
