Exercise 'could prevent thousands of cancers'

Almost 80,000 cases of cancer in the UK could be prevented every year if people put on their gym wear and exercised regularly, according to new figures released today by World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF).

The charity estimated that around 78,700 cases of 12 common cancers could be prevented, including 19,100 cases of breast cancer and 16,100 cases of bowel cancer, by exercising, eating healthily and maintaining a healthy weight.

Professor Martin Wiseman, medical and scientific adviser for WCRF, said: "These estimates set out in stark terms just how high the stakes are and show what could be achieved through making relatively simple lifestyle changes."

Dr Emma Scott from the Breast Cancer Recovery Project at Sheffield Hallam University told Breast Cancer Care that women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer should also put on their ladies fitness wear and exercise.

She said that women who exercise during treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy, tolerated treatments better, experiencing less pain, nausea, insomnia and fatigue.ADNFCR-2569-ID-19461311-ADNFCR
