The theory that donning gym clothing and exercising could help to reduce illnesses related to high blood pressure (hypertension) needs to be examined more closely, it has been suggested.
This was the conclusion which a report published by the German Institute for Quality and Efficiency and Health Care (IQWiG) came to.
Patients with hypertension have a higher risk of heart disease, strokes and kidney failure and the IQWiG states that it is interested in whether increasing exercise levels can decrease these threats.
"It is a sobering fact that medications to lower blood pressure have been tested in dozens of large studies but we still know little about the advantages and disadvantages of physical activity," said professor Jurgen Windeler, the IQWiG's director.
Earlier in the year, the American Society of Hypertension's Annual Scientific Meeting and Exposition was presented with research that suggested individuals who are identified as being at high risk of developing diabetes and hypertension are more likely to be overweight and develop cardiovascular disease.
