Exercise could 'relieve polycystic ovary syndrome'

Exercise in women's gym clothing or ladies fitness wear could help treat polycystic ovary syndrome, research has shown.

Nearly ten per cent of women of reproductive age suffer from polycystic ovary syndrome, which causes secretion of male sex hormones and increases the risk of obesity and Type 2 diabetes.

Researchers from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden found that a both exercise and acupuncture can help to reduce the activity of the nervous system, which is linked to the condition.

Lead researcher Elisabet Stener-Victorin said that it is still unclear what causes the condition.

She said: "We have seen that women with the syndrome often have high activity in that part of the nervous system that we cannot consciously control, known as the 'sympathetic nervous system'.

"We could also see that their levels of testosterone became significantly lower and this is an important observation."

Sufferers often do not produce an egg, which can affect their fertility. It is thought that one in ten British women suffer from the condition to some degree.
