Women suffering from dementia can benefit from donning their ladies fitness clothing and exercising more, an expert has suggested.
Professor June Andrews, director of the Dementia Services Development Centre at the University of Stirling, claimed that both mental and physical stimulation are very important for people suffering from dementia.
Her comments follow the presentation of a study at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America, which showed that walking five miles a week can protect brain volume and slow cognitive decline in those with Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment.
"Exercise, going for a walk with a friend or going to meet people, particularly if you can get out in daylight, all seem to have positive effects for people with dementia or for people trying to avoid dementia," Professor Andrews said.
She explained that exercise gets the heart pumping faster and the lungs working harder, which means that more oxygen is being distributed around the body and, in particular, to the brain.
